Imam Shafi’ee speaks about ‘ilm

وقال الشافعي رحمه الله :

Al-Imaam Shafi’ee –may Allaah have mercy on him- said:

طلب العلم أفضل من صلاة النافلة ،

Seeking knowledge is better than the voluntary prayer.

وقال:

And he also said:

ليس بعد الفرائض أفضل من طلب العلم ،

After the obligatory matters; there is nothing more excellent than knowledge.

وقال :

And he also said:

من أراد الدنيا فعليه بالعلم ، ومن أراد الآخرة فعليه بالعلم ،

The one who desires the world; then upon him is knowledge, And the one who desires the here-after; then upon him is knowledge!

وقال :

And he also said:

من لا يحب العلم فلا خير فيه فلا يكن بينك ، وبينه معرفة ، ولا صداقة ،

The one who does not love knowledge: there is no goodness in him. Thus let not there be any connection between you and him, nor any companionship.”

I Say: They valued and knew the status of busying one’s self with the knowledge of Islam (in it’s proper foundation and methodology) and Allaah raised their status.

Who is your friend?

Imâm Ash-Shâfi’î (rahimahullaah) said:

مَنْ لَا يُحِبُّ الْعِلْمَ فَلَا خَيْرَ فِيهِ فَلَا يَكُنْ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ مَعْرِفَةٌ , وَلَا صَدَاقَةٌ

“There is no goodness in the one who does not love knowledge.

So let there be no recognition between you and him.

And let there be no companionship/friendship between you and him.”

Mosul – Last Episode of Collateral Damage?

This month (March 2017) the world witnessed another episode in the long series of massacres undertaken by the U.S.A. Hundreds of innocent children, women, men, youth and seniors were killed in Mosul by an airstrike. [1]
Familiarly, it was quickly subliminally denied; and the normal propaganda machine was ignited with common terms: ‘pending investigation’, journalists were barred from ground-zero Mosul, and eventually it was as always -in the killing of innocents (mostly Sunni Muslims in the last 20 years or so)- deemed “collateral damage!”

What is collateral damage? It is a euphemism used by the US military as a casual description of civilian deaths caused by bombings. It was widely quoted as an example of insensitive doublespeak because of the underlying callous assumption that a killing called by another name is not a killing. This way the best the victims and their familes can expect is ‘we are sorry.’ [2]

The trend and episodes of American (and it’s allies) killing of innocents is appallingly despicable. Not long ago (the main one) was the hospital run by Médecins Sans Frontières in Kunduz, Afghanistan. Yes, a hospital. Before and during that, we can only try to enumerate the weddings (Yes, weddings) which were crushed by American missiles (talk about wedding crushers!). As for the infamous killer drones, then a voluminous work is needed. Thousands of innocent lives have been killed, thousands destroyed. A report suggests drone strikes kill innocents 90% of the time! [3]

While we, Muslims, strongly encourage opposing the terrorism of ISIS (or the predecessor AlQaeda or the white supremacists for that sake) this should not, and never be, a justification for the careless and unwarranted spilling of innocent blood. Strangely; America and its allies agree that such actions eventually and actually fuel terrorist recruitment – played on the emotions of victims and surviving witnesses-; yet it doesn’t stop!

Islam teaches us that all human life is invoilable and that it is our duty to protect what is inviolable. Isn’t it time that the Americans treated non-American (especially Muslim) lives as equal humans and not mere numbers? Isn’t it time that we see an end to this macabre show of episode after episode after episode of innocent people being killed? Isn’t it time those responsible owe up to the wrong doing instead of running from the truth? Would you like it if it was done unto you and yours? God The Almighty says: “…If anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind. And indeed, there came to them Our Messengers with clear proofs, evidences, and signs, even then after that many of them continued to exceed the limits (e.g. by doing oppression unjustly and exceeding beyond the limits set by Allah by committing the major sins) in the land!” Quran 5:3

The Arabs have a saying which goes: “the excuse was worse than the sin”. That’s the summary of “collateral damage.”

My deep condolences go to all the victims -Muslims & nonMuslims- of any kind of oppression. Deep condolences go to the victims in Mosul.

I hope those who can, and those who have a part to play in bringing about justice and positive change -in this world of ours- take heed and do something.

Halal April Fools?

Q. The 1st of April is known as April fools day. Lies are told and pranks are done in various ways for fun. Is there any thing wrong with this? Can a Muslim be involved in this?

A. May Allah bless you. Here are 5 reasons why a Muslim shouldn’t be involved in April fools lies or pranks in any way.

1. In our beautiful religion lying is not allowed whether the one who does it is joking or is serious because it leads to mere evil. ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood said: The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “…Lying is evildoing, and evildoing leads to Hell. A person will keep on telling lies until he is written as a liar (with Allah).” Narrated by al-Bukhaari in his Saheeh.

2. Q. If someone said What if I do it just for fun and to please people (be cool)? A. It is not allowed, in fact a severe warning came to prohibit this specifically. Mu’aawiyah ibn Haydah said: “I heard the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) say: ‘Woe to the one who tells lies to make the people laugh , woe to him, woe to him.’” Narrated by Abu Dawood and it is a saheeh (authentic) hadeeth.

3. Taking part in April Fools Day is a type of imitating the kuffaar as this was never legislated or practised by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) and he warned, “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, graded saheeh by al-Albaani.

4. Part of the great character of a Muslim and the great rewards promised for him/her is found in this hadeeth of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): “I guarantee a house in Jannah (paradise) for one who gives up arguing; even if he is in the right. And I guarantee a house in the middle of Jannah (paradise) for one who abandons lying even for the sake of fun. And I guarantee a house in the highest part of Jannah (paradise) for one who has good manners.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, graded saheeh by al-Albaani.

5. Q. What if I just send/forward the prank/April fool lie? I didn’t make it, someone else did. I just find it to be funny.
A. Remember my dear Muslim brother/sister Allah says in the Qur’an: “Co-operate in good and piety and do not co-operate in sin and transgression. And fear Allah for Allah is strict in punishment” [Suratul Maaida:2]

Allaah knows best.
Abu Umar; Abdulazeez.

Richness & Rizq (Provision)

Abu Hurairah (radhiyaAllaahu anhu) reported that Messenger of Allah (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasalaam) said:

“O people, richness is not through a lot of commodities, rather richness is being contented in the soul, and surely Allah The Mighty and Majestic gives His slave what He has written for him of the provision; so seek it in a nice way, take that which is permissible and leave-off that which is impermissible.”

al-Mundhiri said: Narrated by Abu Ya’laa and its chain is hasan InshaAllaah.

al-Albaani said in Saheeh Targheeb wa Tarheeb 1701 : (Saheeh Lighayrihi)

Myth busted: Pigeon poo in Haram of Makkah

Assalamu alaykum,

Among the many (funny) debates Muslims have is the theory that the (hundreds of) pigeons in the grand masjid of Makkah don’t poo/drop their faeces in this sacred part of earth.

Well, I have the final verdict. While praying fajr 2 days ago I noticed pigeon droppings next to my friend – I thought that was strange. Stranger and better, in the second sajda of the first rak’a I felt something warm and wet hitting my right sleeve. Probably the wind, I thought. Lo and behold, immediately after the prayer 3-4 people are talking to me in sign language. Yes, fresh, greenish-white pigeon poo on my left arm!

Next time you hear someone say they don’t, tell them they do. The best thing is you get to wash it off with Zamzam water – if that is a good way to cheer you up.

Greetings from Makkah.

P.s. There are some Muslims who have the superstitious belief that if a pigeon poos on you that is an omen that you shall become rich. This, and many other superstitious beliefs are not Islamic.

The Great Qualities of a Muslim

It has been narrated from Waathila and Abu Hurayrah the Messenger of Allah (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) said:

“Be from the people characterized with War’a [1] ; you will be from the best people in servitude,

And be content; you will be from the most thankful among the people,

And love for the people what you love for your self; you will be a believer,

And be a good neighbor; you will be a Muslim,

And lessen laughter; for indeed a lot of laughter deadens the heart.”
Narrated by Ibn Maajah, and al-Bayhaqee in Zuhd al-Kabeer. Albaani graded it as (Saheeh Lighayrihi)
1. This is the act of leaving off some actions fearing they might be impermissible or lead to that which is impermissible.

What is ḥayā’ ?

A hadith worth pondering on….

It was narrated that Qurrah ibn Iyyās (may Allāh be pleased with him) said:

We were at the presence of the Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) when ḥayā’ (shyness from sin and bad conduct) was mentioned.

They asked: O Messenger of Allāh! Is ḥayā’ from the religion?

He said: Rather it is the whole religion!
Then Allāh’s Messenger (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) said:

Indeed ḥayā’, decency, impotence – of the tongue not the heart – and (fiqh) understanding of the religion are from (eeman) faith. Indeed they add to the hereafter and subtract from the worldly life; and what they add to the hereafter is more than what they subtract from the worldly life.

And indeed stinginess, abandoning obligations, and obscene language are from hypocrisy. Indeed they add to the worldly life and subtract from the hereafter; and what they subtract from the hereafter is more than what they add to the worldly life.”

Narrated by Tabaraani, Sheikh Albani graded it as Ṣaḥeeḥ li-ghayrih; Saheeh Targheeb: 2625

The most beloved & The most detestable of you…

2625. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allāh be pleased with him) said that Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ said:

Indeed the most beloved of you to me are:

  • the ones who have the best character,
  • who are lenient [with people],
  • and who get along with others and are easy to get along with;

And indeed the most detestable of you to me are:

  • those who carry gossips,
  • and separate between loved ones,
  • and find fault with innocent people.”
