Love, betrayal & death

In the Tafsir of Suratun-Nisaa; Imaam Ibn Katheer (rahimahullaah) mentioned a story about:

A servant who used to serve a people.

So at a time when her employer was pregnant and was getting her labour pains; he saw a dream and therein a person said to him: ‘Your master shall give birth to a daughter – and this daughter will commit fornication for about a hundred times- and then after; you will marry her, and she will die from a spider!’

And [of course] he does not want to marry [such] a fornicator. So what happened?

[Time passed and] when his mistress gave birth, it was said to him: ‘get a knife so that we cut the umbilical cord’, so he went…

[and caught the opportunity] and instead he stabbed the stomach of the young child, and then fled to a far land.

He stayed there for twenty years and started therein trading; and became amongst the rich and the famous.

Then he returned back to the land knowing that the child had died and the whole thing has been forgotten. So he returned, and sought to get married.

Thus he requested from an [old] woman; that she find for him the most beautiful young woman in the land.

And she replied : ‘I know this young woman and she is the most beautiful in this land.’

So she proposed for him this woman, and he got married to her, and loved her greatly and became attached to her – and so did she.

Once upon a time she asked her about who he was, and where he is from?

And he informed him of his story and what happened;

Amazed, she replied to him : ‘Indeed I am that girl !!!’

He says : ‘You are her!? ’

She says: ‘Yes.’

So he said: ‘Well then there has to be a confirmation of that….’

Thus she showed him the scar of the knife, and indeed he realized it !!

So he said to her: ‘And you have committed zinaa a hundred times!?’

She replied: ‘Something like that happened, but I don’t know the exact number.’ [ In another narration she said : ‘I have left off what I used to do. And I am not going back to it.]’

And as it happened that he had became attached to her, and loved her greatly; he did not seek to separate from her.

So he informed her: ‘All has happened, and I also saw that your demise would be through a spider.’

Thus because of his love for her; he built for her – on the suburbs of the city- a great palace with complete security so that he can protect her from that.

And they lived for the period they were destined to; until one day when they were sitting together, when he showed her a spider on the ceiling and said: ‘By Allaah I see a spider on the ceiling!! ’

So she got up and said to him [belittling the spider]: ‘this is the one you say will be the reason for my death [while knowing how weak and frail the spider is !!] , indeed I will kill it before it kills me.’

So the man [for his love] got up and took off the spider from the ceiling; wanting to kill it, but she got up and said: ‘By Allaah there is no one who will kill it except me.’

And so she stepped on it. But it happened that when she crushed it; some of the poison of the spider entered between her toe nail and her flesh.

So this resulted into a wound, and slowly, and slowly it grew; it continued until eventually it caused her death !!’ [1]

Imaam Ibn Katheer (rahimahullaah) mentioned this story while explaining this verse: “Wherever you may be, death will reach you; even if you may be in fortresses built up high and strong.”

Excellence of Suratul Mulk

Indeed Suratul Mulk is one of the great surahs of The Holy Qur’ân; from the ahadeeth which show the excellence of this Surah are :

1. From Abu Hurayrah (radhiyaAllaahu anhu) who reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu alayhi wasallam) said:

‏ ‏إن سورة من القرآن ثلاثون آية شفعت لرجل حتى غفر له وهي سورة ‏‏ تبارك الذي بيده الملك) ‏

“The Qur’an contains a surah of thirty verses; which will intercede for a man until he is forgiven. It is the Surah: ‘Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion,”

(Narrated by Imaam at-Tirmidhee. And Imaam Al-Albaanee authenticated it : 2315)

2. The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu alayhi wasallam) said:

” سورة تبارك هي المانعة من عذاب القبر ” .

“Surah al Mulk is a prevention of the punishment of the grave.”

(Silsilah ahadeeth Saheeha:1140)

3. And it also narrated from Jaabir (radhiyaAllaahu anhu) : That The prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) never used to sleep until he recited: Soorah al-Mulk.

(Narrated by Imaam at-Tirmidhee. And Imaam Al-Albaanee authenticated it : 2315)

These noble ahadeeth show the great importance of this Surah; reciting it, memorizing it, understanding it, and most importantly putting it into action.

40 Hadeeth (#18)- Sheikh Abdulmuhsin Abbaad

Hadeeth 18

On the authority of Abi Dharr; Jundub ibn Junaada, and Abi Abdurrahmaan Mu’adh ibn Jabal from the Messenger of Allah (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) who said:

“Have taqwa of Allah wherever you are, and follow up a bad deed with a good one it will wipe it out, and behave well towards people.”

It is related by at-Tirmidhee who said it is Hasan. In some copies: It is Hasan Saheeeh.

Sheikh Abdulmuhsin explains:

1. This hadeeth by its three sentences comprises what is sought from the Muslim towards his Lord, what is sought from him towards himself, and what is sought from him towards others.

2. His statement: “Have taqwa of Allaah wherever you are”, linguistically taqwa means: to keep a barrier between a person and what he fears, like wearing sandals to protect himself from the harmful things on the ground, and like taking houses and tents as barriers [protection] from the sun’s heat, and like that.

In Islamic legislation, taqwa is: a person making a barrier between himself and the anger of Allaah, and that is by carrying out the commands and staying away from the impermissible and believing the reports [in the sacred texts] and to worship Allaah in the manner conforming to the Legislation not through bid’ah [innovations].

And the taqwa of Allaah is sought all times, and all places, and all situations: so he fears Allaah openly and secretly, when he is with the people and when he is alone, as has come in the hadeeth: “Have taqwa of Allaah wherever you are.”
3. His statement: “… and follow the bad deed with a good one”, when a person commits a sin; he repents. Repentance is from the good deeds; and it wipes out what preceded it of the minor and major sins, and this [wipe-out] can also be by doing good deeds; indeed they wipeout the minor sins, but the major sins are only wiped by repenting from them.

4. His statement: “And deal with the people in good manners”, indeed it is sought from an individual that he deals with all the people in a good way; so he deals with them just as he would like them to deal with him, based on his statement: “None of you shall truly believe until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” And his statement: “Whoever wishes to be saved from the fire and to enter paradise; then let his death reach him while he believes in Allaah and the here-after, and let him deal with the people same as how he would like them to deal with him.” And Allaah described His prophet that he is upon exemplary manners, and it has been reported from Aisha that his manners was the Qur’an[1], meaning he practices what is mentioned in the Qur’an. And so many ahadeeth have come showing the excellence of good manners and encouraging conducting others with good etiquettes and warning from the bad manners.

Benefits from the hadeeth:

1. The complete sincere advise of the Messenger to his Ummah; and part of that is what is in this hadeeth of the three important comprehensive advises.

2. The command of having taqwa in all situations, times, and places.

3. The encouragement of following the bad deeds with good ones.

4. That the good deeds wipeout the bad deeds.

5. Encouragement of dealing with people in a good manner.

Proud of your lineage?

Abu Hurayrah (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) said:

“Some people must either refrain from boasting of their late ancestors- who are nothing but the charcoal of Hellfire- or they shall be lesser than a small earthworm that rolls on stool on its nose.

Allāh indeed freed you from the arrogance of [the people of] the pre-Islamic era and their boasting of their ancestors.

People are either a pious believer or a miserable disobedient.

All people are the descendants of Adam, and Adam was created from earth.”

Saheeh Targheeb wa Tarheeb: 2625 , Sheikh Al-Albaani said it is Ḥasan Ṣaḥeeḥ.

Don’t trust them…

“You cant trust or befriend those who don’t establish the five daily prayers.

If they can forget their Lord; they will definitely forget you. They do not value their connection and relationship with their Lord; you think they’ll value you!?”

Abu Umar.

Imam Shafi’ee speaks about ‘ilm

Al-Imaam Shafi’ee –may Allaah have mercy on him- said:

طلب العلم أفضل من صلاة النافلة ،

Seeking knowledge is better than the voluntary prayer.

And he also said:

ليس بعد الفرائض أفضل من طلب العلم ،

After the obligatory matters; there is nothing more excellent than knowledge.

And he also said:

من أراد الدنيا فعليه بالعلم ، ومن أراد الآخرة فعليه بالعلم ،

The one who desires the world; then upon him is knowledge, And the one who desires the here-after; then upon him is knowledge!

And he also said:

من لا يحب العلم فلا خير فيه فلا يكن بينك ، وبينه معرفة ، ولا صداقة ،

The one who does not love knowledge: there is no goodness in him. Thus let not there be any connection between you and him, nor any companionship.”

I Say: They valued and knew the status of busying one’s self with the knowledge of Islam (in it’s proper foundation and methodology) and Allaah raised their status.

Who is your friend?

Imâm Ash-Shâfi’î (rahimahullaah) said:

مَنْ لَا يُحِبُّ الْعِلْمَ فَلَا خَيْرَ فِيهِ فَلَا يَكُنْ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ مَعْرِفَةٌ , وَلَا صَدَاقَةٌ

“There is no goodness in the one who does not love knowledge.

So let there be no recognition between you and him.

And let there be no companionship/friendship between you and him.”

Mosul – Last Episode of Collateral Damage?

This month (March 2017) the world witnessed another episode in the long series of massacres undertaken by the U.S.A. Hundreds of innocent children, women, men, youth and seniors were killed in Mosul by an airstrike. [1]
Familiarly, it was quickly subliminally denied; and the normal propaganda machine was ignited with common terms: ‘pending investigation’, journalists were barred from ground-zero Mosul, and eventually it was as always -in the killing of innocents (mostly Sunni Muslims in the last 20 years or so)- deemed “collateral damage!”

What is collateral damage? It is a euphemism used by the US military as a casual description of civilian deaths caused by bombings. It was widely quoted as an example of insensitive doublespeak because of the underlying callous assumption that a killing called by another name is not a killing. This way the best the victims and their familes can expect is ‘we are sorry.’ [2]

The trend and episodes of American (and it’s allies) killing of innocents is appallingly despicable. Not long ago (the main one) was the hospital run by Médecins Sans Frontières in Kunduz, Afghanistan. Yes, a hospital. Before and during that, we can only try to enumerate the weddings (Yes, weddings) which were crushed by American missiles (talk about wedding crushers!). As for the infamous killer drones, then a voluminous work is needed. Thousands of innocent lives have been killed, thousands destroyed. A report suggests drone strikes kill innocents 90% of the time! [3]

While we, Muslims, strongly encourage opposing the terrorism of ISIS (or the predecessor AlQaeda or the white supremacists for that sake) this should not, and never be, a justification for the careless and unwarranted spilling of innocent blood. Strangely; America and its allies agree that such actions eventually and actually fuel terrorist recruitment – played on the emotions of victims and surviving witnesses-; yet it doesn’t stop!

Islam teaches us that all human life is invoilable and that it is our duty to protect what is inviolable. Isn’t it time that the Americans treated non-American (especially Muslim) lives as equal humans and not mere numbers? Isn’t it time that we see an end to this macabre show of episode after episode after episode of innocent people being killed? Isn’t it time those responsible owe up to the wrong doing instead of running from the truth? Would you like it if it was done unto you and yours? God The Almighty says: “…If anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind. And indeed, there came to them Our Messengers with clear proofs, evidences, and signs, even then after that many of them continued to exceed the limits (e.g. by doing oppression unjustly and exceeding beyond the limits set by Allah by committing the major sins) in the land!” Quran 5:3

The Arabs have a saying which goes: “the excuse was worse than the sin”. That’s the summary of “collateral damage.”

My deep condolences go to all the victims -Muslims & nonMuslims- of any kind of oppression. Deep condolences go to the victims in Mosul.

I hope those who can, and those who have a part to play in bringing about justice and positive change -in this world of ours- take heed and do something.
